A 70 Year Legacy
It all started in 1953, when a local milkman and his father opened a couple of frozen custard stands on the Boardwalk. That milkman soon guided his family business enterprise that now includes over 25 food concessions on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the food and beverage operations at the Santa Cruz Warriors arena, and providers of fun foods nationwide.
Our legacy is based on the positive impact we make in our community – both locally and in the amusement park industry. We are proud members of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) and honored to be named an award-winning employer.
A True Family Business
When Ted Whiting, Jr., with the help of his father Leslie Theodore Whiting, started the business, there was no question that it would become a family partnership.
Over the years, all eight of his children became involved. Today, two of those children – Ken Whiting and Margie Whiting Sisk – share the ownership responsibility and Ken and Margie’s nephew, Jeff Whiting, is the Vice President and General Manager.
Over 20 of Ted Whiting Jr’s grandchildren work, or have worked, for the family business. Even his great grandchildren, the fifth generation, have started to get some working time in.
“I think’s it’s safe to say that Whiting’s will remain a family operation for quite some time,” notes Ken Whiting.
All About The People
Without question, our greatest pride comes from our outstanding crew!
We have employed hundreds of people every year, and use every effort to make it a rewarding experience. We are big believers that first jobs matter, and we know the impact that young employees have. Their hard work not only adds incredible value to our business, but we also know how memorable a summer job can be. Because of that, we love hearing from past employees and the stories they tell fondly looking back at their time working for Whiting’s Foods.
Keeping employees happy translates to quality customer service – one of Whiting’s Food’s main missions. “Our emphasis on customer service, combined with keeping up-to-speed with food industry trends are the keys to our success,” says Ken Whiting. “Our relationships with people are very important to us,” he continued. “Whether it’s our employees, customers, suppliers, or other concessionaires, making those relationships work for everyone keeps us moving ahead.”
