The Sandae

A Boardwalk Original Since 1935

When the Whiting family started operating the "black and white" custard stands on the Boardwalk in the 1950s, we also acquired the recipe for a unique ice cream sandwich known as the Sandae (which had been served at the Boardwalk since 1935!). The tasty concoction consisted of chocolate malt ice cream between two graham crackers and dipped in delicious chocolate...and the name comes from the unique topping: a dusting of crushed almonds that resembles sand.

Over the years we have tinkered with and (we like to think) perfected the recipe to create a treat unlike anything else. We are proud that this original product honors our family history on the iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and we hope you try one (if you haven’t already!). You can currently find it on the menu at our location called Freeze, next to the Haunted Castle.
